About Us

We are artisans of organic skincare, personal-care and wellbeing remedies. Our aim is to give you products of the finest quality, from our creative concepts and designs, through the synergy of carefully selected ingredients in our formulations, to our meticulous handmade process, all done in-house at our watermill workshop.

Ethos

Savon Stories is a family company inspired by the memory and character of our grandfather, whose long life of 115 years was partly the gift of something we call raw minimalism: eating less, but intensely nutritious foods. Convinced that your skin is a second stomach, we have preserved this ideal, formulating in ways that promote higher nutritional density, and hence sustainability and zero-waste.

Organic Purists

Organic Purists

Except for non-botanicals like salts and minerals, every ingredient is organic. Organic farming is healthier for the soil, local ecology, and produces plants with more vitamins, like antioxidants.

Waterless

Waterless

All our skincare formulations are waterless, which gives them the highest concentration of nutrients, makes them more sustainable, and avoids the need for preservatives.

Cold Processed

Cold Processed

By avoiding heat, our formulations retain a higher concentration of key compounds, for superior skincare and more hydrated wash experience.

History

I was raised on the family farm by my inspirational grandfather. Living in a self-contained environment, we had everything we needed, and what we didn’t have we didn’t desire. That usually meant being skilled and resourceful and soapmaking was one of the first things I learned.

In the late 1990s, I befriended a local Syrian soap-maker in South France. The natural soap we all use today originates from Syria and the craft was brought to Europe several hundred years ago. I shadowed him, refining my craft until after a year, around the age of sixteen, I finally became a maître savonnier (that’s the fancy French title for “master of soap”).

When my grandfather died in 2009, the soapmaking that began as a life skill, then grew into a craft, now became a way to remember him. I created Savon Stories in his memory, and moulded our ethos around his virtues: generosity, self-restraint, and preserving the best of tradition. It was something very personal, but I’m delighted that the world can share it with me and so many have understood what we’re trying to do and have joined us in the journey.

The name

The word ‘savon’ originally comes from the Arabic saboon, which means ‘to cleanse’, which is the foundation of effective skincare. The “stories” part came from our grandfather’s love of storytelling. But we also believe that every living thing, including the plants we source, has a life story drawn from its experience: the soil it was laid in, the water that fed, the tough winds and climate that nurtured its inner strength, and the way it was handled. All of these things effect the life story of a plant and its interaction with your skin. Our close attention to this is why our formulations work.
